Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo is once again staring down an impeachment battle after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) tabled a new motion seeking his removal from office during a special sitting on Monday.

The motion, sponsored by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accuses the governor of gross violation of the Constitution, contravention of various laws, and abuse of office. Issuing the formal notice,

Matwere declared: “I wish to give notice of motion for the removal of Honourable Amos Nyaribo, the Governor of Nyamira County, from office by way of impeachment on the following grounds: gross violation of the Constitution of Kenya and other laws, and abuse of office.”

Following the tabling, the Speaker adjourned the House to Tuesday, November 18, at 9:30 a.m., when MCAs are expected to reconvene and deliberate further.

This is the third major impeachment attempt against Governor Nyaribo since 2023. He previously survived ouster efforts in October 2023 and September 2024 — the latter failing by a razor-thin margin when the motion garnered 22 votes, just one short of the then-required two-thirds majority of 23.

The latest push comes amid increased scrutiny of his administration. On October 29, 2025, EACC detectives raided his homes and offices in Nyamira, Kisii, and Nairobi as part of an investigation into an allegedly irregular KSh 382 million tender awarded to Spentech Engineering Limited. The commission is also probing allegations that the governor irregularly approved KSh 18 million in payments to himself, including KSh 5 million in ex-gratia payouts and KSh 13 million in house allowance reimbursements.

With several wards awaiting by-elections, the assembly currently has about 31–32 sitting members. At least 21 votes would be needed for the motion to pass and trigger a Senate trial.

Governor Nyaribo’s allies have consistently described the impeachment bids as politically driven, while supporters insist the efforts are motivated by long-standing governance concerns. As of November 18, no vote has been taken on the fresh motion, and deliberations are ongoing.

The recurring standoff between the executive and the assembly has raised fears of stalled development and service delivery in Nyamira, underscoring persistent strains within Kenya’s devolved governance structure.
