Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga, has issued a firm warning to anyone attempting to divide the party, declaring that ODM will remain united as Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election.

“Those imagining they can break ODM — it will never happen. In my hands, ODM will not be divided,” he said vowing that the party would not be fractured under his leadership.

Dr. Oburu emphasized that the party would only consider political alliances that strengthen its position and dismissed any efforts aimed at weakening it.

He also highlighted ODM’s participation in the broad-based government as a strategic move to deliver tangible benefits to the party’s traditional strongholds, particularly in Nyanza, rather than for personal gain.

“We joined the broad-based government to benefit the people, not for individual interests,” he said, affirming that the partnership remains strong.

Dr. Oburu further underscored the importance of unity within the Luo community, describing politics as “a game of numbers.”

“The Luo community must remain united so that when we negotiate, we negotiate with strength,” he said.

Looking ahead to 2027, Dr. Oburu made it clear that ODM has no intention of returning to the opposition benches.

“In 2027, we will either go alone or negotiate a good deal. We are not going back to the opposition,” he stated.

His remarks were echoed by Migori Governor Dr. Ochilo Ayacko, who criticized party infighting over positions, noting that some members were prioritizing personal ambitions over unity and alliances.

“People are busy fighting for seats rather than uniting ODM. Some are even pushing away our friends,” Governor Ayacko said.

The statements come as ODM marks 20 years of existence and continues to navigate the political landscape following the passing of its long-time leader Raila Odinga, whose vision shaped the party’s identity.

The party has also faced conflicting statements from senior figures, including ODM Senator James Orengo, who recently made remarks in Mombasa that appeared at odds with Dr. Oburu’s call for unity.

Analysts say these differences reflect ongoing internal debates over strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.

Despite these tensions, party leaders maintain that joining President William Ruto’s broad-based government after the 2022 elections was intended to secure development and influence for supporters, rather than signal a permanent merger with the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.

As the 2027 elections approach, ODM officials continue to project confidence in the party’s strength and negotiating power, with senior figures like Dr. Oburu insisting that unity remains the cornerstone of its success.
