Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo was impeached on Tuesday after 23 of the 31 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) voted to remove him from office, marking the first successful bid to oust him after two failed attempts.

The motion, introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere and sponsored by Majority Leader Julius Matwere, cited gross misconduct, abuse of office, and irregular appointments in violation of the Constitution.

Twenty-eight MCAs attended the special sitting, and all 23 who participated in the vote backed the motion—surpassing the constitutional threshold of 21 votes required to impeach a governor in a 31-member assembly.

Majority Leader Matwere hailed the decision as “a victory for accountability and good governance in Nyamira County.” Governor Nyaribo, who leads the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), had not issued a public response by press time.

This is the third impeachment attempt since Nyaribo assumed office in 2022, following unsuccessful efforts in 2023 and earlier in 2025.

In line with constitutional procedure, the matter now heads to the Senate, which must convene within 14 days to consider the charges. If at least two-thirds of senators vote to uphold the impeachment, Nyaribo will be permanently removed from office. Until then, Deputy Governor Ezekiel Onsongo is expected to take over in an acting capacity.

The development follows months of escalating tensions between the county executive and the assembly over delayed services, budgetary standoffs, and governance concerns in the tea- and banana-growing county of more than 600,000 residents.

The Senate’s verdict in the coming days will determine Nyaribo’s political fate, with potential court challenges looming should the impeachment be sustained.
