New York, NY.

Kenya once again stamped its authority on global distance running, making history at the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon by sweeping both the men’s and women’s podiums — the first time in the event’s history that one nation has dominated both divisions.

In the men’s race, Benson Kipruto clinched victory in 2:08:09, edging fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso, who clocked the same time but finished just strides behind. Albert Korir, the 2021 champion, sealed an all-Kenyan top three with a time of 2:08:57.

Moments earlier, Kenya had already swept the women’s race in equally stunning fashion. Hellen Obiri defended her title with a commanding performance, setting a new course record of 2:19:51, breaking the 22-year-old mark of 2:22:31 set by compatriot Margaret Okayo in 2003. Sharon Lokedi finished second, while Sheila Chepkirui completed the clean sweep in third.

Obiri’s back-to-back New York triumph — powered by a relentless final surge through Central Park — underlined her reputation as one of the greatest marathoners of her generation.

The historic double podium sweeps showcased Kenya’s unmatched depth, discipline, and consistency in long-distance running. It also extended the country’s proud tradition of excellence on one of the world’s toughest marathon courses.

This year’s New York Marathon, organized by New York Road Runners, attracted more than 50,000 runners and millions of spectators across the city’s five boroughs. Amid the cheers and global celebration, it was once again the Kenyan flag that flew highest.
