Kenya vs Senegal in friendly match

Antalya, Turkey.

Senegal’s Teranga Lions unleashed a merciless display on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, dismantling Kenya’s Harambee Stars 8-0 in an international friendly at the Mardan Sports Complex. The humiliating scoreline is Kenya’s worst in 60 years, eclipsed only by a 13-2 loss to Ghana in 1965, and ranks as one of the heaviest defeats in the nation’s football history.

The match formed part of both sides’ preparations for December’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Senegal sought to rebound from a 2-0 defeat to Brazil, while Kenya’s newly appointed head coach, Benni McCarthy, took charge of his first match at the helm.

Senegal wasted no time asserting dominance, racing to a 4-0 lead within just 16 minutes. They added two more before halftime to head into the break 6-0 up.

Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané spearheaded the carnage with a first-half hat-trick, including a composed penalty. Nicolas Jackson bagged a brace, while Malick Diouf added another to complete a devastating opening period.

The second half brought little relief for Kenya. Ibrahim Mbaye struck three minutes after the restart to make it 7-0, and Cherif Ndiaye rounded off the rout with an 80th-minute penalty.

Even after Mané and other starters were withdrawn, Senegal maintained full control, overwhelming a Kenyan side that struggled to match their pace, precision, and physicality. Harambee Stars rarely threatened and appeared disjointed defensively throughout.

The 8-0 hammering surpasses Kenya’s recent heavy defeats—including 5-0 losses to Mali in 2021 and Kuwait in 2009—and raises urgent questions about the team’s defensive structure and overall preparedness just weeks before AFCON qualifiers resume.

The reaction back home was immediate, with Kenyan fans expressing shock, frustration, and anger across social media, many calling the display unacceptable and demanding swift corrective measures.

Kenyan fans on X reacted with fury and despair. Ahmed Mohamed @Asmali77 wrote simply: “This is embarrassing.” Journalist Collins Okinyo (@bedjosien) added: “Sad part is that after this humiliation the Kenyan squad will be rushing to take selfies with Senegal players and asking for jerseys.” FKF president Hussein Mohammed later issued a public apology, calling the result a “wake-up call” and promising immediate reviews.

For Senegal, the emphatic win restores confidence and highlights their attacking sharpness heading into AFCON. The Lions are slated for another friendly later this week, while Kenya returns home to regroup and confront the glaring weaknesses exposed in Antalya.

The result offered a sobering reminder of the widening gulf between Africa’s football powerhouses and its emerging sides—leaving Harambee Stars with significant work ahead under coach McCarthy.
