Kilifi, Kenya.
The Kilifi County Referral Hospital has achieved a historic milestone after successfully delivering its first-ever set of conjoined twins joined at the abdomen.
Governor Gideon M. Mung’aro announced the breakthrough on X (formerly Twitter), praising the hospital’s medical team for their expertise and dedication.
“This milestone reflects our growing ability to handle complex medical cases and reinforces our commitment to quality maternal and child healthcare,” he said.
The rare delivery was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Sumaiya (Gynecologist), Dr. Kadivani (Pediatric Surgeon), and Dr. Kalama (Pediatrician), supported by maternity and HDU nurses.

Both the mother and twins are in stable condition and will be transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi for further specialized assessment and possible separation.
Governor Mung’aro commended the team’s “exceptional skill and teamwork,” noting that the achievement underscores ongoing investments in Kilifi’s healthcare system.
Medical experts say conjoined twins occur in about 1 in 60,000 births globally, with abdominal connections among the most complex.
The announcement has drawn national attention, with KBC Channel 1 and other media outlets highlighting it as a major success for devolved healthcare in Kenya.
Kilifi health officials celebrated the feat as a symbol of progress in maternal and pediatric care, setting a new standard for county-level medical excellence.
