WINDSOR, England.

Former England football captain David Beckham was formally knighted by King Charles III on Tuesday, honoring his decades-long contributions to sport and humanitarian work in what Beckham described as the “proudest moment” of his life.

The 50-year-old global icon, now officially Sir David Beckham, received the title during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, attended by his wife, Victoria Beckham, and parents Ted Beckham and Sandra West.

Kneeling before the monarch, Beckham was dubbed a knight as King Charles uttered the traditional words, “Arise, Sir David.”

Beckham, who grew up in a modest East End home in London’s Leytonstone, reflected on his journey from local football pitches to international stardom. “I have been lucky to win trophies and play for incredible teams, but to be honored in this way—by His Majesty, here at Windsor Castle—is truly beyond anything I ever imagined,” he said, visibly emotional.

The knighthood crowns a glittering career that saw Beckham make more than 700 club appearances for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, and earn 115 caps for England—many as captain between 2000 and 2006. His curling free-kick against Greece in 2001, which secured England’s place at the 2002 World Cup, remains one of football’s most replayed moments.

Off the pitch, Beckham has built a legacy of philanthropy. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2015, he has led campaigns for children’s health and education worldwide. In 2024, he became an ambassador for the King’s Foundation, a charity promoting arts, environmental awareness, and traditional skills among young people. A “lifelong royalist,” Beckham said he often encounters global admiration for Britain’s monarchy during his travels.

The honour follows a long wait. Beckham was first nominated for a knighthood in 2011, but the process was delayed amid public scrutiny and tax-related investigations—later cleared by the courts. He previously received an OBE in 2003 for services to football.

Victoria Beckham, who designed her husband’s tailored morning suit inspired by King Charles’s signature style, called the recognition “so deserved.” “You’ve always been my knight in shining armour—now it’s official,” she wrote on social media when the award was announced in the King’s Birthday Honours list earlier this year.

Other honourees at Tuesday’s ceremony included Nobel laureate Sir Kazuo Ishiguro and theatre legend Dame Elaine Paige.

Now co-owner of Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami CF, Sir David joins the ranks of knighted British cultural icons such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, and Sir Lewis Hamilton. His knighthood not only celebrates a career of sporting excellence but also the enduring power of humility, perseverance, and global influence.
